Hanover councillor bidding for provincial Liberal nomination

A former Metro Toronto citizen of the year, now a lawyer and municipal councillor in Hanover, wants to run for the Liberals in the next provincial election.

Selwyn J. Hicks was raised in Torontos troubled Jane and Finch area. With support from teacher mentors, a Big Brother and youth leadership programs, he attended college, became a Young Liberal and eventually a backroom campaigner and party organizer and policy maker, he said Thursday.

I grew up in poverty; six kids from five fathers, living off welfare and not much prospect, Hicks said. Id like to say I worked hard and had a lot of help from various programs and people. My life has been a model example of what can happen when a village comes together to help a child. Ive been very fortunate.

Hicks was in Toronto on business and unable to attend a fundraising event in Meaford where Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Liberals were to hear Thursday night that Hicks is the only candidate for their partys nomination so far.

Property auctions diversify market

Three Intracoastal Waterway lots in Carolina Forest will go on the auction block on Thursday - a form of marketing that real estate agents say is becoming more popular for residential properties in a slow market.

"It's just another alternative. You get more focused marketing, and you have a day of sale," said Jerry Blanchard, real estate broker and part owner of Sea Land Properties and Auction LLC.

Auctioning is becoming more popular for residential properties, analysts say, because of high inventories and a buyer's market.

Sea Land Properties has been a real estate brokerage company in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., for three years, but just added the auction part to the business in December because they saw the demand.

"With the current market and properties not moving, we felt it was a good decision to offer this as well as the standard listing, put a sign in the yard and wait to see what happens," Blanchard said.

Event auctions art for ARC

Tongue-tingling champagne, scrumdiddlyumptious entrees and more than 100 donated artworks make for a night to remember.

Friday from 5 to 10 p.m., more than 270 guests are expected to get their fill of food, art and social flair during the 2007 Artists for ARC event, presented by Arc-Winnebago County Disability Association, held at LaSures Banquet Hall.

The auction/dinner features a one-hour special event from 5 to 6 p.m. for ticket holders, where guests can enjoy a new champagne buffet and live jazz music with Mario Noche.

"Its kind of pre-event where people will actually have an opportunity to meet with and talk to the artists," said Meghann Kasper, board member and ARC volunteer.

At 6 p.m., doors open to the main event, where dinner is served and bidding begins on more than 100 art pieces from pottery and paintings to homemade purses, in the live and silent auctions.

Online auction of Nicole Smith diaries fails

BEIJING, April 17 (Xinhuanet) -- Two bidders for two Anna Nicole Smith diaries pulled out of an online auction Saturday because of allegations the diaries had been stolen, an auction house spokesman said Sunday.

The two diaries -- written in the early 1990s -- failed to sell and are now available for a minimum bid of 25,000 U.S. dollars each.

"We have a buy-it-now situation," said Doug Norwine, the director of music and entertainment memorabilia at Heritage Auction Galleries of Dallas.

Among the two bidders' concerns were allegations by Smith's lawyer/partner, Howard K. Stern, the diaries had been stolen and should be returned to her estate, Norwine explained.

"They just got cold feet," he said.
